It is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes the damaging effect of free radicals that are linked to the ageing process. Coenzyme Q10 is especially important in the process of energy creation. Whenever there is a demand for increased energy, there is also an increased demand for it. Research has shown coenzyme Q10 to be useful in maintaining a healthy heart, blood pressure, and blood sugar control. The ability of the body to produce it declines with ageing, with sharp reductions between the ages of 40 and 50, and 50 and 60. Top food sources are liver and oily fish.

Coenzyme Q10 is a key substance for energy production in the mitochondria, and it is dependent upon succinate to enter the cell. It achieves this by taking an unpaired electron (free radical) from oxygen. Taking supplemental antioxidants takes away this crucial electron.

Up to 40 years of age, we see zero decline in coenzyme Q10 in the lungs, Between the ages of 40 and 80, we see a 40 percent decline, and this is accompanied with a 40 percent increase in diseases of the lungs.

The same decline in coenzyme Q10 in other organs shows and increase in diseases associated with those organs. At 30 years old, we still have 80 percent of our coenzyme Q10, but this percentage drops to 40 percent when we reach 50 and only 23 percent when we reach 60. If we slow this decline, then we can slow and even prevent the development of disease.
